Can we dismiss an employee for failing to substantiate their right to personal leave?

Q: A new employee joined our business and the following week began a period of absence, reportedly due to illness. The employee has been absent now for around a month. The employee’s manager has been in regular contact with her to request a reason and evidence (e.g. medical certificate) for the absence, but the employee has failed to provide them. Can we dismiss the employee? What are the legal ramifications?
