Must we accept a long notice period upon resignation?

Q: We have had an employee resign who provided more notice than the minimum required by the applicable modern award or employment contract, i.e. they provided 2 months when only required to provide 4 weeks. We are considering offering payment in lieu of notice. In this case, are we required to accept the long notice period and therefore pay out for 2 months?
