What is ceremonial leave?

Definition: Ceremonial Leave

Ceremonial leave enables Indigenous Australians to attend ceremonies of cultural significance.

Who is entitled to ceremonial leave?

National system employees don’t have a general statutory entitlement to ceremonial leave under the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth). However, the entitlement to paid or unpaid ceremonial leave may be provided in:

  • a modern award;
  • an enterprise agreement;
  • an employment contract; or
  • a workplace policy.
