Study leave

Previously part of ‘Other types of leave’ chapter – last updated December 2023

This chapter explains study leave and who may be entitled to this leave.

What is study leave?

Definition: Study Leave

Study leave enables employees who are students at higher education or other institutions to take time off (paid or unpaid) to study or attend classes and exams.

Who is entitled to study leave?

There is no statutory obligation to provide study leave, so it is up to the employer to decide whether to make it available for employees.

If you choose to provide employees with paid or unpaid study leave, you should make sure you have a written policy on study leave in place.
